Keynote Abstract by Scott Leeb

Title: From Big Data to Knowledge Discovery: A Difficult Journey

Ninety-percent of the data in the world today has been created in the last two years. With the increase of mobile devices, social media networks, and the sharing of digital photos and videos, we are continuing to grow the world's data at an astounding pace. According to former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, every two days we create as much information as we did from the dawn of civilization up until 2003. Data is big...and getting bigger.

Unprecedented access to information and emerging technology (allowing us to harness different types of data - both structured and unstructured) have resulted in the rise of big data analytics, which holds the promise of helping companies and governments make more informed decisions by enabling individuals to analyze large volumes of data. However, success in achieving this goal is often elusive. There is no shortage of challenges - technical, cultural, organizational, operational - associated with addressing this daunting issue.

Please join Scott Leeb as we explore the question of how do we extract Big Knowledge from Big Data and avoid the pitfalls that have confounded many organizations. Mr. Leeb will use case studies from both the commercial and government sectors, and call on his experience in leading the business intelligence/knowledge management functions at five leading international organizations to address this important topic.

Knowledge as an intellectual capital has become an important asset to any nation nowadays. As knowledge is a valuable resource that allows the nation to function intelligently, they are constantly encouraged to use the brainpower to complement the rapid development of Information Technology (IT) which is a vital tool for generating and managing knowledge. Realizing its importance, Knowledge Management International Conference (KMICe) will once again provide a platform for international presentation of research findings as well as discussions and sharing of recent advances in the field. This conference will bring together leading researchers and developers in a wide variety of areas, with a common interest in improving the state of the art of knowledge management (KM). This conference will also bring together people from the academia and industry to establish closer cooperation and ties, and creation of K-based society.

As a management university, Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) has initiated the platform in organizing a conference of this nature. KM has been accepted as a major driving force that drives the global economy. K-economy is at the paramount of the global discussion and most of nation leaders including this region are pushing this knowledge-based economy so they do not left behind.

Regions within the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) should take this opportunity to learn and be better equipped so that KM can be implemented to promote a win-win situation among the participating countries with respect to economic growth.
